Wayfinding is the process or activity which ascertains one’s position and planning to go through a route. It is one of the crucial ways how people orient or navigate themselves from one location to other.

But wayfinding is a bothersome task for visually impaired people. And the difficulty tends to arise in the non-appearance of visual cues such as street signs or crosswalk lights. There are more and more chances for these people to be vulnerable to accidents or injuries.

However, wayfinding tactile solutions work wonders for the visually impaired.

Let us have a look at some of the standard tactile systems.

Detectable Warning Surfaces

Detectable Warning Surfaces

The detectable warning tiles and other types of surfaces consist of different patterns of truncated domes that are aligned in rigid grids or squares. This pattern can be identified by cane or underfoot to give warning to the blind about drop-offs, street crossing, and other trip complications. These surfaces can be easily spotted at curb ramps, walkways, transit stations, etc.

Braille and tactile letters

Due to the regulation of the “American with Disabilities Act,” it is mandated that public organizations and facilities should give equivalent access to the disabled such as the visually impaired. So there is a need for braille and tactile letters as well as identification signs, door numbers, and other signs for different public places

Wayfinding on the basis of directions

For the visually impaired, wayfinding can also be facilitated through bars and domes. The directional wayfinding system has metal domes and bars which are drilled and installed into the ground so that it can make wayfinding hassle-free for the visually impaired. Photoluminescent exit signs are used for directional wayfinding

Overall, these all tactile solutions are no less than a remedy for the problems of visually- impaired people. So make sure your construction project sticks to tactile solutions to ensure your project is compliant and suitable for all kinds of visitors.
